North Indian Migrants : Is the Hatred Fair?

In Tamil Nadu, there exists a certain animosity towards migrant workers from North India, except from those who hire them for lower wages. I have spent a lot of time reflecting on this issue, yet no clear answer emerges. Why does this hatred exist? Is it rooted in the long standing resistance to the imposition of Hindi by the central government?, Has this led to a general distaste for the language and those who speak it? Or is there something deeper at play?

These migrant workers leave behind their families and homes to find work here, often because they lack formal education or because job availability is low in relation to their region’s population. The reasons for their migration are varied, but it is undeniable that they are hard workers. For the little wage they earn, the amount of labor they put in is significant.

Yet, an incident I witnessed recently in Chennai shed light on why this hatred might exist. I was standing in line at a petrol bunk, waiting to fill up my vehicle. The person working the pump was from the North and spoke only Hindi. In front of me was an elderly man, a local Tamil speaker who didn’t appear to know English. They were having an argument.

Curious, I listened to what was happening. The old man said, “இந்த வடநாட்டு காரங்க லாம் வந்து நம்ம தாலிய அருக்கிறாங்க", meaning “These people from the North come here and create trouble for us.” As the argument unfolded, I found that the old man had asked for petrol worth “நூற்று இருபது,” meaning 120 rupees. But the Hindi-speaking worker could not understand Tamil, and the old man could not explain it in English. 

In that moment, something became clear to me. The anger, the frustration, it is not always about language imposition or Hindi dominance. It is about the simple everyday interactions that get tangled up in a web of miscommunication. For someone like me, who can manage broken Hindi or English, conversing with migrant workers is not an issue. But for a common Tamil speaker, someone who only knows Tamil, what happens then?

These workers are not just found in small shops or running their own businesses, where language barriers might be less noticeable or easier to navigate. They are often employed in essential services like petrol bunks and other critical areas that people rely on daily. In these settings, effective communication is not just a convenience but a necessity. When a language barrier hinders a worker's ability to understand basic customer needs, it can lead to significant frustration for both the worker and the customer.

For instance, imagine a scenario where a local Tamil speaker needs to convey a simple request or deal with an urgent issue, only to face a worker who cannot understand them due to language differences. This can result in delays, misunderstandings and an overall negative experience. These situations highlight the broader implications of placing individuals in roles where communication is crucial but language barriers exist. It raises the question of whether it is fair or practical to put workers and customers in such challenging positions, where miscommunication can impact essential services and everyday interactions.

Who is at fault here? The migrant workers who come in search of a better life? Or the employers who hire them for lower wages, knowing full well that communication will be an issue for many locals?, This situation raises questions we must confront as a society. Is it fair to expect a common Tamil speaker to adapt in their own land? Or should we hold employers accountable for creating such situations? What can be done to bridge this gap?

It is as if these everyday garments are adorned with a touch of festivity that elevates them to something truly memorable.

Even the flowers we usually see on the roads and in shops suddenly become part of elaborate Pookalam designs. These intricate patterns made from vibrant petals create a welcoming and festive atmosphere that adds a touch of beauty to every home.

Every detail that is normally just a part of daily life suddenly becomes a centerpiece of celebration. What we usually see as ordinary takes on a new light, revealing the extraordinary beauty in the familiar and the everyday.

ARM Review

To begin with, Tovino Thomas, Man! what a performance he has delivered. Not just him, but every character played their part exceptionally well. Tovino, in particular stood out as he handled not one, but three distinct roles, each one completely different from the other. His ability to switch between these roles with finesse is remarkable, showcasing his versatility and dedication as an actor. Each of his characters felt well-crafted and he carried them effortlessly, proving yet again why he is one of the finest in the industry.

The making of ARM also deserves applause. For a film that blends adventure, drama, and period elements, the technical aspects were handled impressively. The fight sequences, especially the "kalari" portions, were choreographed with precision and the cinematography really elevated the visual appeal of the film. The dynamic framing during the action sequences pulls you into the world of the film, adding layers to the storytelling. 

This film also touches upon deeper themes, such as caste-based discrimination and societal politics. It also explores how the caste system impacts individuals, often labeling a person based on their parent’s/ Grandparents actions. Tovino skillfully portrays the internal struggles of a character facing these injustices, showing how deeply ingrained such prejudices can be. The female leads in the film were given significant roles and their characters were written with care, not just as side notes but as integral parts of the narrative.

When it comes to the screenplay, however, there is room for improvement. While it is a solid attempt for an adventure-drama film of this scale, the pacing can feel sluggish at times. If you are someone who enjoys fast-paced screenplays that keep you hooked, this might not be the film for you. Like most adventure films, This film takes its time to settle in, building up the world and characters before it dives into the heart of the plot. The slower pace, while intentional, might not resonate with everyone.

Some scenes felt unnecessarily stretched and there were moments where the film lagged, giving a sense that it could have been trimmed down. The story also drifts occasionally, deviating from the main plot before finding its way back. These detours may pull you out of the narrative at times, making the film feel longer than its actual runtime. 

On the brighter side, the music and background score were definite highlights. They truly helped elevate key scenes, adding emotional depth and intensity where needed. However, despite the solid music, some scenes felt underwritten, lacking the depth or focus that could have made them stand out.

ARM is a decent watch. While it might not have the tightest screenplay or the most engaging narrative flow, it offers strong performances, excellent cinematography and a commendable attempt at tackling important social issues. If you are  in the mood for a slow adventure with a touch of historical drama, this film is worth giving a shot.

Kishkindha Kaandam Review

Two hours of complete engagement. That is exactly what "Kishkindha Kaandam" offers. The film wastes no time and jumps right into the plot, hooking you from the very beginning. Every scene is purposeful, there is no wandering, no dragging. Each moment ties back to the central narrative, making it one of the most tightly packed films I have seen in a while.

What sets this film apart is its unique story. The writer has done a phenomenal job crafting a narrative that stands out. It is not your typical mystery. Yes, there is suspense but the film connects you emotionally drawing you in with their arcs. As the layers of the plot unfold, you find yourself more and more invested in what happens next.

The performances of the actors are another major highlight. Each character feels lived-in, with the cast pulling off nuanced portrayals that add depth to the film. Whether it's the lead actor carrying the emotional weight of the story or the supporting characters who bring complexity and realism to their roles, the performances make you care about the people on screen. You are  not just watching a mystery unravel, you are rooting for the characters as they navigate their challenges, making the story even more engaging.

The quality of filmmaking also elevates the experience. From the direction to the cinematography, every technical aspect adds to the tension and drama. The first half keeps you engaged with a steady build-up, but the second half is where the film truly takes off. The pacing quickens, the stakes get higher and you are left on the edge of your seat until the very end.

If you are looking for a film that grabs your attention for two straight hours, "Kishkindha Kaandam" is the one. With its gripping screenplay, excellent performances and a story that pulls you in, this is a mystery drama that delivers on all fronts.

Perhaps it's a random compliment from someone on the street that catches you off guard but leaves you smiling for the rest of the day. It could be a friend offering you a sip of water or a bite to eat or the person who helps you pick up dropped groceries. 

Maybe it's a fellow commuter who offers you their seat or a cab driver who refuses extra fare. It might be your neighbor bringing over a plate of homemade food, a colleague who genuinely asks how your day is going or a stranger who lets you merge into traffic with a friendly wave. It could even be the auto driver who takes the time to show you the correct direction.

These are just a few of the countless small moments that happen every day. Reminds us that kindness does not have to be grand to be meaningful. They are simple, often momentary, but they stick with us, leaving a mark we carry forward. In a fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook how much these little gestures can lift us up.

And the beauty of these small acts is that they are effortless. It does not take much to brighten someone’s day. Maybe next time you are out and about, you will be the one who offers that smile, holds the door or shares a small kindness. Who knows? That small act might mean more to someone than you realize. These moments, though small, can ripple out in ways we may never fully understand.

Because in the end, It's always the little things.

That does not mean his music is any less valuable, just that it may appeal to those who still appreciate the slower, more immersive experience of a complete track.

The music industry itself has become more dynamic, with new trends shaping the kind of music that gets more attention. Artists often have to balance staying true to their style while also embracing new trends. Yuvan, throughout his career, has successfully evolved without losing his signature touch and that speaks volumes about his versatility. For example, his work on Mankatha was refreshing, mixing a more modern and upbeat vibe. Yuvan knows how to play with genres and trends, adapting his style to fit the project’s needs while still retaining his unique musical identity.

Ultimately, music is subjective and different styles will resonate with different people. While some listeners may prefer songs that offer instant gratification, others seek the slow burn of melodies like those Yuvan creates. Neither is right or wrong, it’s simply a reflection of diverse tastes and the changing times.

Yuvan Shankar Raja continues to create, adapt and experiment. For those who appreciate his work, his legacy remains untarnished. For newer audiences, it might just be a matter of revisiting his tracks with an open mind, letting the music sink in and realizing that timeless art often takes a little more time to appreciate.
