Beyond The Fireworks

Today, a simple moment illuminated the true spirit of Diwali. With just a small bundle of crackers the expectation was a quick simple celebration. But as each cracker was lit in solitude the thrill faded quickly and the bursts of light felt strangely empty without someone beside to share them.

Nearby, a family gathered with laughter and excitement young and old lighting up the night together. Their joy was heart warming to witness showing Diwali is not just about the lights and sounds, it is about the people sharing in them. Even the simplest celebrations feel endless and fulfilling when surrounded by loved ones.

Memories returned to simpler days when Diwali meant visiting a friend’s home. His welcoming parents, without hesitation shared their crackers freely treating me like family. Together friends emptied big boxes of fireworks in no time, ending the evening with a warm meal around the table. Those moments of shared laughter stays fresh even after years.

Now far from home, this year’s Diwali feels a bit quieter, a little more faraway. Whether it is age or simply the miles, this celebration shows that festivals hold their magic in togetherness and that shared joy is what truly keeps the light alive.

A Distant Diwali in 2124

It's Diwali morning, October 31, 2124. The sky is a dull gray and the streets below are silent filled with smart homes glowing with holographic displays of celebration. A low hum of drones patrols the air ensuring compliance with the strict regulations laid by Government.

As I step outside, I encounter a figure who seems out of place. He looks astonished, gazing at the surroundings with wide eyes. “You look lost", I said, noticing his bewilderment.

“I am", he replies glancing around. “I can't believe this is Diwali. It is so... different.”

“This is how we celebrate Diwali", I explained, gesturing to the quiet streets. “Families connect through virtual reality platforms to simulate personal gatherings".

He furrows his brows. “So, you don’t meet in person? No festive meals together?”

“No", I respond. “We send digital vouchers and virtual sweets. That mimics the taste of handmade sweets".

He shakes his head, looking unconvinced. “That’s hard to live through. Back where I come from, we exchange homemade treats fill our homes with lights and celebrate together. Those moments mean everything".

I can see the disappointment in his expression.

“What about your decorations?” he asks, glancing at the holograms projecting festive lights.

“Everything is eco friendly and monitored", I explain. “The government regulates our energy use. It’s all about sustainability but it comes with strict rules.”

He gives me a curious look. "That sounds limiting. We had the freedom to celebrate however we wanted even if it got messy. It felt alive".

“What about the prayers and rituals?” he asks, curious. “Do you perform them?”

“Yes, but it’s different", I replied. “We light eco-deepams via holograms and share our prayers in digital platforms".

He looks thoughtful, "Back in my place, we light deepams and gather in homes sharing our prayers, feeling the warmth of each other’s presence. It was a celebration of togetherness".

As we continue our conversation, I feel a strange familiarity with him, yet I can’t quite place it. His way of celebrating feels richer but despite our differences, the spirit of Diwali, its joy and the light it brings remains an experience that connects us.

As the sun begins to set and the holographic lights immitating deepams comes to life, he glances at his watch looking hurried. “I should be going. It’s important I don’t miss it", he said.

“Wait!", I call out curious. “What’s your name?”

“Just call me a traveler", he replies with a knowing smile before he turns to leave.

“Traveling where?” I ask, feeling an unexplainable sense of longing.

“To a place where celebrations mean more than just visuals", he says glancing back. “Where they come alive in ways you can’t imagine.”

With that, he walks away disappearing into the dusk, leaving me standing in middle of my holographic decorations.

Chai, Sugar and Ammachi's Love

Tea has always been a quiet part of my life like a gentle presence. I would not call myself a tea person exactly but tea holds a place in my memories like an old friend who may not be around every day but is always there when you need them. When I think of tea a warm memory comes to mind from my school days spent on weekends at my Ammachi's house.

As a young boy I was diligent with my schoolwork completing my weekend homework quickly so I could enjoy my time at Ammachi’s house. Every Friday evening we would hop on the 89C bus rumbling along the road to my grandmother’s home and with each stop my excitement would build. I would be bouncing on my seat barely able to wait for that familiar sight of her doorway that warm kitchen where she would already be expecting me and As soon as I arrived I would rush straight past everyone to Ammachi with my heart set on one thing her chai.

Her chai was unlike anything else in the world I know you are probably wondering what made it so special, it was not just tea it was her tea. She made it with love of course but more than that she made it with a secret ingredient sugar and lots of it. Most people might add a spoon or two to their cup but not Ammachi her tea was almost like liquid sweetness, one fourth of that glass would be sugar and each sip was like a burst of pure joy. It was a sugary elixir, a child’s version of ambrosia each time I took a sip the tea got sweeter and sweeter until I could not leave a single drop behind.

I know I know you people must be wondering that too much sugar is not good for health, even my mom and valiyamma would say the same thing every weekend as they shook their heads telling Ammachi not to spoil me. But she would just smile that gentle smile of hers the one that spoke a language only I understood. It was as if we had our own little secret a special bond shared over those sugary cups of chai. Her tea was not just about the taste it was about the love she poured into each cup her way of telling me she was happy to see me. I would sit with that cup savoring it feeling every sip like a hug every sugary note like a little reminder of how much she cared.

That chai was my first love, when it came to tea the memory that would forever stay in my heart. Now that I am older I cannot have that tea anymore, those weekends are just memories and I find myself missing that tea that warm kitchen and most of all my Ammachi. It is funny how something as simple as tea can carry so much meaning, I miss the way she would smile as I ran into her kitchen the way she would look at me with that soft sparkle in her eyes more than anything I miss that feeling of being loved so purely so unconditionally as if her tea was a magical cure for anything life might throw at me.

Now whenever I have a cup of tea I think of her of those weekends and of that sweet tea served with love and even though I can never have that tea again it warms my heart to know that I once did, It tells me that love even in its smallest simplest gestures never truly fades and sometimes if I close my eyes I can almost taste it again.

Why I Believe Smartwatches Are a Bad Investment

A watch should be simple and serve the purpose of telling time. It does not need to be a mini phone or a constant notifier strapped to my wrist. Smartwatches have turned this accessory into another gadget that requires daily maintenance. They come with a hefty price tag and need constant charging, doing tasks that do not save much time or effort. To me, they simply do not live up to the hype.

Let’s start with the basics. A regular watch can run for years with maybe just the occasional battery change if it is quartz. But a smartwatch? You are plugging it in every night or every few days just like a phone. For one-fourth of the price of a smartwatch, one could get a quality mechanical watch that will outlive any tech running smoothly for years without a single charge.

Smartwatches are advertised as convenient replacements for pulling out your phone from your pockets. But what time are you really saving by glancing at your wrist instead of taking your phone from your pocket? Notifications pop up, but you still need your phone to fully respond and reply. While you can answer calls on a smartwatch, why in the world would you want to do that? That is exactly why phones exist. The smartwatch is not a phone substitute, it simply adds another screen to track rather than simplifying things.

The fitness angle is another big push. Not everyone needs or uses all those fitness features. If someone is not dedicated to working out daily or tracking every step, wearing a smartwatch for fitness feels unnecessary. We can lead active lives without reminders to “walk, sleep, drink” or obsessing over calorie counts. Fitness does not require a digital coach on my wrist and the constant data can feel like overkill rather than motivation. Those into fitness can simply get a less distracting fitness band that offers more accuracy without added complications.

Another aspect to consider is the repair costs associated with smartwatches. If something goes wrong repairs can be expensive and time consuming. Unlike traditional watches which can often be fixed for a fraction of the cost and repairing a smartwatch typically involves high charges due to the technology involved.

In a world where we are already glued to enough gadgets, a smartwatch feels like one more unnecessary screen to check. Phones, laptops, and tablets take up so much of our time. A smartwatch extends that digital addiction onto our wrists. Adding one to the collection does not enhance life it just makes it harder to step away from screens and be fully present.

Ultimately, Smartwatches do not feel worth the money. They are expensive and require regular attention while trying to fix problems that do not exist. A traditional watch keeps time simply and reliably with no charging or notifications needed. For me, the classic watch does the job just fine without distractions, making a smartwatch an unnecessary luxury rather than a useful upgrade.

A New Voice in Tamil Nadu Politics

Actor Vijay’s debut in Tamil Nadu politics with his party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has brought new energy and curiosity into the state’s politics. Known as a reserved figure offscreen he surprised many including myself by delivering a confident and clear speech during his first political conference. This unexpected strength in his address suggests a commitment that feels both grounded and serious. His decision to openly challenge both state and national powers set TVK apart signaling a desire to be a genuine alternative rather than a mere addition to the political lineup, Unlike many new politicians who usually play it safe.

In Tamil Nadu, there is a deep rooted loyalty to these traditional political giants. The state has often remained allergic to new political faces, particularly those without a significant background in governance. Breaking through this established pattern will be Vijay’s biggest challenge if he is serious about carving out a unique identity for his party. Because even before this several leaders have entered with promises of reformation only to become absorbed by the very system they once criticized. Also If TVK were to form alliances in the future, it would directly contradict his initial promises and make his declarations as nothing more than empty political talk.

Moreover an effective opposition is vital in any political landscape. Without it the ruling party may take monopoly, leading to unchecked power and governance that ignores the needs of people. Opposition provides necessary criticism that keeps those in power accountable and ensures that diverse voices are heard. In any position of authority whether in politics or other sectors, critics play a crucial role in maintaining balance and preventing the abuse of power. The presence of a strong opposition is essential to uphold democracy and foster a culture of accountability. Vijay’s entry into politics may or may not serve this purpose.

While many celebrate his choice to leave a profit making film career where he reportedly earned over 200 crores per film, it is essential to question the true motivations behind his political move. Because Politics offers substantial financial opportunities especially through government contracts and funding. For example Running a government project worth 2000 crores opens the door for substantial funds to be misused. Unlike movie profits which face strict tax scrutiny this misallocation often slips without any tax consequences. Thus the narrative of sacrifice that surrounds his transition into politics should be approached with skepticism as it may not show the full picture of his intentions.

Ultimately Vijay's entry into politics with TVK presents a challenge especially given Tamil Nadu's historical loyalty to two traditional parties. The coming months will determine if he can break this long established pattern and make a lasting impact or if he will simply become another figure in Tamilnadu Politics.

Film Appreciation: Unbreakable

"Unbreakable" directed by M. Night Shyamalan, released in 2000 and is one of the most unique takes on the superhero genre. Known for his psychological thrillers and unexpected twists, Shyamalan delivered a film that defies conventional superhero storytelling. Its appeal lies not in explosive action or elaborate superpowers but in its quiet but intense examination of purpose.

The story follows David Dunn played by Bruce Willis who survives a catastrophic train accident without a single injury. Opposite him is Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, a man born with brittle bone disease, who becomes obsessed with comic books and the concept of real life superheroes. Elijah believes David’s survival is a sign that he is part of a larger purpose pushing David to explore his seemingly unbreakable nature. Together, their dynamic creates an exploration of the hero and anti hero dynamics layered with suspense and realism.

Shyamalan’s choice of cinematography and colours enhances the emotional depth of the film. Cinematographer Eduardo Serra uses a muted color scheme with heavy blues and greens that give this film a melancholic tone contrasting with the vibrant aesthetic associated with comic book films. Many shots are long, adding a sense of tension, capturing the mystery between the characters. Every frame is carefully designed to bring a feeling of suspense without a grandeur set piece.

James Newton Howard’s music underscores the film’s thoughtful nature. The music is subtle, avoiding the bombastic sounds of typical superhero films, yet it carries an emotional weight that deepens the connection to the characters. The use of simple, haunting melodies creates a sense of something profound and mythic.

"Unbreakable" stands out because it challenges its viewers to rethink what it means to be a hero or villain. It is not a film for those expecting high octane action or a traditional heroic journey. Instead, it appeals to those who enjoy layered storytelling, introspective characters, and thought provoking themes. It is ideal for viewers who appreciate films that ask more questions than they answer and leave much up for interpretation.

The film is a masterpiece, showing Shyamalan’s distinct storytelling prowess at its best. It does not rely on spectacle but instead takes the viewer on a journey that is psychological, emotional and also grounded in the human experience. It is not just a movie for fans of superheroes, it is a film for anyone who has ever questioned their purpose or wondered about the boundaries of human potential. With its complex characters, haunting visuals and powerful score, "Unbreakable" is one of the most understated yet impactful films in Shyamalan’s career and arguably one of the best in its genre.

Film Appreciation: Uriyadi

Uriyadi is a 2016 Tamil film directed by Vijay Kumar, who has also played the lead role. The film features a fresh cast with actors like Mime Gopi, Citizen Sivakumar and Chandru. All of them fit perfectly into this raw narrative. When it got released 2016 it did not receive the attention it deserves, but quickly made its mark as a bold, fearless portrayal of caste politics in Tamil Nadu.

Film is set in the backdrop of 1990s. The plot follows four carefree engineering students, with Lenin (Vijay Kumar) leading the group. Their lives take a sharp turn when they get exposed to local caste based politics. What starts as a typical college life story soon turns into violence and chaos, especially after the explosive interval block, a simple fight turns into a violent clash.

Vijay Kumar's Lenin stands out as a symbol of the impulsive youth who refuses to back down, no matter how deep the problem is. There is an honesty in his characterization. But he is not a flawless hero, He is hot headed, reckless, and vulnerable. On the other hand Mime Gopi’s antagonist role is chilling, with his portrayal of a ruthless caste leader who manipulates the system to maintain his power. The supporting cast also delivers raw performances.

The cinematography by Paul Livingstone captures the rawness of the rural setting. There are no attempts to romanticize the village life, Where violence seems to be in and around every corner. The handheld camera work enhances the chaos. The screenplay is tight, though it occasionally move towards familiar revenge dramas, it sets itself apart by not offering easy resolutions.

The music by Masala Coffee and Anthony Dasan complements the mood without being overbearing. The background score, especially during the pivotal scenes, keeps the tension alive and paves way to the unpredictability of the events. The use of folk instruments adds another layer of authenticity to the storytelling.

This film shows us how systemic issues like caste can erode humanity and how sometimes personal becomes political in the most brutal ways. It is also a masterclass in independent filmmaking. There is no glossy finish instead it feels like raw footage of events that are all too close to reality, which is why it resonates so deeply.

This film is a must watch, not just because of its social relevance but because of the way it approaches those societal issues, unafraid to leave you uncomfortable, to make you think and more importantly, to make you feel. It is not perfect, but it is brave.

When Trust Turns To Silence

We often find ourselves placing trust in what is visible, in the stories people tell us or in the roles they play. It feels safe to believe in what we see because questioning those around us can feel like questioning the very bond we share. So we stand by offering our support thinking we have understood things better than the rest.

But sometimes the stories are not what they seem. Beneath the surface what was presented as one thing gradually turns into something else. Even when doubt sneaks in and we ask for clarity but we are often met with reassurances, with words that make us feel guilty for even questioning.

The hardest part is not the shift in the story itself but the realization that our belief which felt solid now looks misplaced. The trust we offered feels naive and we are left with the weight of being the one who stood by something that was not quite real.

When trust turns to silence, questions remain unanswered leaving a sense of confusion. What once seemed clear has become uncertain. Perhaps silence is the only way forward.

But even in those moments, trusting others does not make you a fool. It takes courage to believe in people, to offer support when the truth is unknown. And while we may not always get it right, it is better to have believed with conviction than to have stayed on the sidelines afraid of being wrong.

A Walk Down Dental Memory Lane

After reading my friend’s blog about her day at the dentist, I could not help but relate to her experience! A visit to the dentist is never pleasant, especially when you know something is wrong. She captured that vibe perfectly, with all those tiny instruments that seem harmless but can cause so much trouble.

I remember how my father used to bargain with me to take me to the dentist, especially since I was so stubborn about going. He would promise to buy me my favorite toy on the way back. Those little things made it so much easier to visit that intimidating building, even when my stomach felt like it was doing flips.

Back in those days, I prepare myself for the sharp needle that would numb my mouth. Just thinking about it made me anxious! But thankfully, I eventually found dentists who used a gel like numbing agent instead. It was a strange feeling to have half my face numbed, but it definitely beat the fear of a needle. The best part was that I deliberately bite my lips and it felt like I was chewing on rubber, completely painless! I know it might sound odd, but I found a guilty pleasure in it, enjoying the weird sensation.

And yes, the sound of the dental drill while waiting in the lobby is a genuine fear! It keeps on playing in your ears and makes the anticipation so much worse. But once the appointment is over, the relief from toothaches is worth it all.

After each treatment, the tough part came when I was told to stick to liquid food for the night. I always thought it was a bit cruel to have to give up solid food. However, there was a silver lining, I got to enjoy plenty of juices and best of all, ice cream! The dentist even said that ice cream was good for soothing my mouth, so I happily embrace those sweet excuses.

Then there is that moment of awkwardness when the dentist and assistants peek into your mouth. It can be a bit nervous gives an insecure feeling about what they might think of your dental issues. But, like my friend pointed out, they are there to help, and that is what truly counts.

Reading her blog reminded me that dental adventures are universal experiences. It is comforting to know we are all in this together, tackling the dental drills and trading our fears for rewards. Here is to finding joy in the little moments and sweet treats that come after!

The Paradox of Individuality Within Relationship

In discussions about relationships, the idea of individuality often comes up. People insist that you can be yourself while being with someone else. This has always puzzled me. When two people come together, it is almost never just about "being yourself", it is about what you want from the other person and what they want from you. So where exactly does individuality fit into that?

These days, many cling to the belief that they can keep their individuality intact within a relationship. But honestly this feels far from reality. Relationships require effort, connection and most importantly sacrifice. If maintaining absolute individuality is the goal, then why be in a relationship at all? Relationships are not built on isolation, they thrive on mutual involvement.

At the heart of any relationship is a simple truth that people come together to fill a void, to seek something they do not have. This need for connection complicates the idea of "being yourself". If the very reason you are in a relationship is to get something from someone else, can you really claim you are maintaining pure individuality?

Beyond emotional needs, relationships also shape who we become over time. The longer you are with someone, the more you adapt and adjust, consciously or not. You begin to mirror habits, preferences and even values. This is not about losing oneself but rather the natural influence of being close to someone. In any meaningful relationship you inevitably change.

When a person prioritizes individuality over the relationship, it can leave the other feeling sidelined and neglected. They may feel invisible with their needs overshadowed by the other’s focus on themselves. This can lead to loneliness, frustration and even emotional distance.

So, if individuality is what you value the most here is a tough question, why are you seeking relationships in the first place? Why not just stay alone and keep your individuality intact?

Does Sorry Still Mean Anything?

Sorry is just a simple word, yet it carries a value that often gets lost in the chaos of life. Sometimes it is said too easily without thoug...
